Petit Chablis occupies the outer plateau of the Chablis appellation, where the geology shifts from the famous Kimmeridgian marl of the premier and grand cru vineyards to harder, younger Portlandian limestone. Higher elevation, shallower soils, better drainage: the wines run leaner and more immediate, built for early drinking rather than cellaring.
Domaine Thierry Hamelin has worked this ground since 1840, seven generations based in Lignorelles, now run by Thierry and his son Charles across 36.70 hectares in Poinchy, Beines, and Lignorelles. Vinification is uncompromising in its simplicity: stainless steel from harvest to bottle, gravity flow, thermo-regulated fermentation, nine-plus months on lees. No oak ever enters the picture.
2023 brought a big crop and a hot September, so this one comes in rounder and more tropical than the appellation’s usual lean citrus. The Guide Hachette des Vins jury gave it two stars and a coup de coeur in the 2026 edition.
