Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Grand Cru Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann 2022
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Grand Cru Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann 2022
FRANCE : ALSACE : RANGEN DE THANN
BIODYNAMIC : Riesling
FULL-BODIED, SALINE, VOLCANIC MINERAL, IODINE, APRICOT, NEUTRAL OAK
Clos Saint-Urbain is Zind-Humbrecht’s monopole within the Rangen Grand Cru — the southernmost and steepest classified vineyard in Alsace, built on near-vertical terraces of volcanic greywacke that imprint the wine with smoke, salt, and stone. The domaine has farmed biodynamically since 2002 under Olivier Humbrecht MW, the first Frenchman to hold that qualification.
In 2022, a warm and solar Alsace season met Rangen’s naturally late-budding vines and cooler late-summer conditions. The result is one of the lowest-alcohol Clos Saint-Urbains on record — 12.8% ABV, pH 3.1, bone-dry, and tightly wound. As Humbrecht himself put it: “Like a volcano fart.” 99 pts, Wine Advocate.
PAIRINGS :
| Alsatian tarte flambée | cream and smoked bacon echo the wine’s mineral salinity |
| Oysters on the half shell | iodine and saline edge mirrors the sea-spray character |
| Aged Munster cheese | the classic Alsatian match — funk and fat anchor the stony intensity |
