Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru 'Les Beaux Monts' 2018
FRANCE : BURGUNDY : VOSNE-ROMANÉE
ORGANIC : Pinot Noir
MED-BODIED, RASPBERRY, REDCURRANT, VIOLET, VOSNE SPICE, NEW OAK
Aux Beaux Monts sits at the top of the Vosne-Romanée slope, where the commune runs into Flagey-Échézeaux. Dujac farms 0.72 hectares of it on clay and limestone, organically since 2001, and ferments on native yeast in stainless steel so the site stays in charge.
2018 was one of the three hottest Burgundy growing seasons since the war, which usually means dark fruit and weight. This cuvée went into the vat with 75% whole bunches and came out red-fruited: raspberry, redcurrant, wild strawberry, violet, Vosne spice. Eighteen months in French barrique, roughly 70% new, bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Decanter 95 pts. Vinous 93 pts, where Neal Martin called it his pick of the domaine's 2018s and asked for another three to five years in the cellar. Under two acres of vineyard behind the whole thing.
PAIRINGS :
| Roast duck breast with cherry | the canonical Vosne match, and the tannin handles the fat |
| Morel and wild mushroom risotto | earth pulls out the stony base under the fruit |
| Aged Comté, 24 months | nutty and crystalline, flatters the new oak |
