PORTUGAL : ALENTEJO : VINHA DO BADECO
Touriga Nacional
FULL-BODIED, TOBACCO, LICORICE, BLACK PLUM, SMOKE, NEW OAK
The Vinha do Badeco is a 1.03-hectare parcel inside Herdade do Esporão's estate, planted in 1988 — among the oldest Touriga Nacional vines in Alentejo. Hand-harvested on September 12, 2017, foot-trodden in traditional marble lagares, and aged for a year in new French oak before a minimum two years in bottle. Bottled July 2019; by the time it left the winery the wine had already had time to settle into itself.
Wine Enthusiast gave it 91 points — "a full, rich and spicy wine" with "ripe berry flavors filled with concentration and a peppery edge." The residual sugar sits at 2.2 g/l — firmly dry — with the structural tannin to carry another decade of development.
PAIRINGS :
| Grilled lamb chops with rosemary | the Alentejo pairing; tannins cut the fat, smoke echoes the char |
| Braised short ribs | concentrated fruit and smooth tannins built for long-braised beef |
| Aged Serpa cheese with chouriço | salt and fat draw out the dark fruit; the classic Portuguese table approach |
