Fabre Montmayou 'Barrel Selection' Malbec 2022 750ml
ARGENTINA : PATAGONIA : RÍO NEGRO
SUSTAINABLE : Malbec
MED-BODIED, BLACKBERRY, VIOLET, DRIED CURRANT, FRENCH OAK
The Río Negro Valley in Patagonia sits at the southern edge of Argentina's wine map — one of the coolest, most extreme growing environments in the country. Sandy desert soils high above the river, dramatic swings between day and night temperatures, and persistent Patagonian winds create difficult conditions for viticulture. They're also precisely what drives the freshness and aromatic lift that separates this Malbec from its Mendoza counterparts.
Hervé Joyaux Fabre came to Argentina from Bordeaux in the early 1990s — first to Mendoza, then south to Río Negro when he recognized what Patagonia's cool climate could do. The 2022 harvest brought warm spring winds and hot-day, cool-night summer conditions that concentrated the fruit; March rains eased temperatures and let the Malbec ripen gradually. Sixty percent of the blend aged 12 months in used French oak. Vinous 92 points.
PAIRINGS :
| Grilled lamb chops with chimichurri | the Argentine pairing; dark fruit and structured tannin hold up to the char and herbaceous sauce |
| Braised beef short ribs | medium-full body and French oak structure match the richness; the wine has the weight to carry it |
| Aged manchego or hard sheep's cheese | dark fruit contrasts the salt; tannin cuts through the fat cleanly |
