Greywacke was founded in 2009 by Kevin Judd, who spent 25 years as chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay before setting out on his own. Sourcing from 12+ blocks across the Wairau Plains and Southern Valleys, Judd blends Marlborough's riper fruit-forward soils with the cooler, more mineral Southern Valleys sites — the result is a Sauvignon Blanc with more layered texture than the regional commercial standard. The majority ferments in stainless steel; a portion ferments spontaneously in old neutral oak barrels before blending. Wine Spectator 93 pts.
The 2023 vintage challenged growers with a wet spring and early disease pressure before a sunny March delivered slow, clean ripening. The wines are pure and fresh, with vibrant natural acidity and moderate alcohol.
