Single barrel bourbon from Buffalo Trace in Frankfort, KY — one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States, on the same land where Hancock Lee established the Leestown settlement in 1775. The name isn't decorative: Lee co-founded the shipping port on the Kentucky River that became a hub for tobacco, hemp, and whiskey before there was a United States to speak of.

Hancock's shares its high-rye mash bill with Blanton's, Elmer T. Lee, and Rock Hill Farms — four single barrel bourbons from the same distillate that diverge by barrel selection and finishing proof. At 88.9 proof it's the most approachable of the four: warm cinnamon and vanilla up front, dark fruit in the mid-palate, dry oak and black pepper on the finish.
