High West and The Prisoner Wine Company are both owned by Constellation Brands, which explains the specificity of the barrel source — these aren't generic wine casks, but the French oak that held The Prisoner's flagship Napa red blend. High West draws from five distinct mash bills (ranging from a high-corn bourbon to a 95% MGP rye and High West's own 80% rye) aged four to fifteen years before the red wine finish is applied.

Rye leads in the glass — cinnamon, red pepper, and a cooling mint edge — but the wine barrels have the last word, layering on macerated cherry, grape jelly, and an oily, fruit-forward texture. The bourbon component grounds it with brown sugar and dark chocolate. Bourbon Culture 8.1/10.
