Hugel Pinot Gris Classic 2022
Hugel Pinot Gris Classic 2022
FRANCE : ALSACE
SUSTAINABLE : Pinot Gris
MED-FULL BODIED, YELLOW PEACH, MIRABELLE PLUM, ACACIA HONEY, TOASTED ALMOND, NO OAK
Famille Hugel has been making wine in Riquewihr since 1639 — thirteen generations at one address. The family owns 30 hectares of prime sites in the village, most of them Grand Cru, but they never market wine under the Grand Cru designation; their own tiered naming is what they trust. The “Classic” Pinot Gris is the entry tier in that system, and its open secret is that it draws a meaningful portion of fruit from Hugel’s declassified Grand Cru holdings.
In 2022, Hugel started picking eight days after the rest of Alsace — September 12th, by hand, in small tubs carried gravity-fed to the press with no mechanical pumping at any stage. It’s a hot vintage with more richness than acid; the wine delivers. James Suckling found it “ripe, generous and juicy with just a touch of tannin that helps anchor the richness. Almost silky finish with hints of toasted almonds and smoke” — 92 pts.
PAIRINGS :
| Terrine de campagne | the classic Alsatian pairing; fat in the pork meets richness in the wine |
| Salmon in cream sauce | fruit weight and enough acidity to cut through without overpowering the fish |
| Roast pork with apples | stone fruit and honey in the wine mirror the dish’s own sweetness |
