Paolo De Marchi first made Cepparello in 1980 from the estate's best Sangiovese and nothing else, at a time when a Chianti Classico label still obliged growers to blend in other grapes — which is why it carries Toscana IGT to this day. The fruit comes from the oldest estate vineyards in the north-western corner of Chianti Classico, mostly galestro at 400–480 meters, facing south and southwest.
2020 opened with a mild, dry winter and a March cold snap, then ran dry and steady until rain arrived in late August, with a calm September to finish. Fermented in conical French oak casks and aged in French oak barriques, it lands at 15% alcohol. It is De Marchi's second-to-last vintage before the estate's 2022 sale. Wine Advocate 96 pts. Wine Spectator 96 pts, #80 on its Top 100 of 2023.
