Jacob Schram planted Napa's first hillside vineyards on this slope in 1862. The Davies family bought the property in 1965 and revived it as Schramsberg, then in 1994 began replanting the estate blocks to Bordeaux varieties. These are the southernmost vineyards in the Diamond Mountain District, set between Nash and Ritchie Creeks at 500 to 1,000 feet, ringed by forest and cropped at two tons per acre.
The 2018 season was long and mild, so the fruit hung into early November with its structure intact. Twenty-two months in French oak, 65% of it new, and 825 cases made. Wine Enthusiast 92 pts.
PAIRINGS :
| Dry-aged ribeye | Char and fat meet the mountain tannin head-on. |
| Braised short ribs | Long-cooked collagen softens the grip. |
| Aged Comté, 24 months | Nutty and crystalline against black fruit. |
