Karas farms the western end of Armenia's Ararat Valley, between Mount Aragats and Mount Ararat, with its highest vineyards near 1,100 meters on volcanic soils of basalt-derived clay, limestone and alluvial stone. Gabriel Rogel, from Mendoza, has run the cellar since 2013, and this blend is picked by hand in mid-September and fermented in stainless steel, malolactic included.
Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc make up the 2023 — ripe dark fruit, supple tannins and a savory, herbal edge that keeps it from reading as just another fruit-forward red. More mountain than valley floor, and an easy argument for what the Caucasus can do.
