Királyudvar — "The King's Court" — sits on a historic estate in Tokaj that supplied wine to the Habsburgs for centuries. Anthony Hwang acquired it in 1997, partnered early with Tokaj revival figure István Szepsy, and rebuilt both the vineyards and the winemaking program from the ground up. The deeper influence came from Domaine Huët in Vouvray, Hwang's other principal estate: the Loire's biodynamic approach traveled east, and Királyudvar converted in 2008, gaining full certification in 2011 — one of only two certified biodynamic estates in the region.
The Furmint Sec draws from six grand cru vineyard sites in Mád and Bodrogkeresztur, all planted on volcanic rhyolite tuffs that give Tokaj its distinctive mineral signature. Furmint is the anchor — thick-skinned, high-acid, and capable of producing dry whites with a flavor density and structural longevity that few varieties match anywhere. Eight months in large-format Hungarian oak (5hl and 16hl barrels) adds texture without adding wood flavor.
The 2021 vintage was defined by a cool, dry September that slowed ripening and held acidity through harvest — exactly the conditions that make Tokaj Furmint worth cellaring. Winemaker Szabolcs Juhász has been at the estate since 2009, trained under Tokaj legend Zoltán Demeter, and he lets the terroir do most of the arguing.
PAIRINGS :
| Pan-seared scallops | citrus and mineral echo the brine; acidity cuts through the butter |
| Asparagus with hollandaise | high-acid whites are the reliable match here; the wine's texture holds up to the sauce |
| Fresh goat's cheese | the wine's freshness cuts the tang; floral notes complement the chalky richness |
