Kobal Blaufrankisch 2024 750ml
SLOVENIA : ŠTAJERSKA : HALOZE
ORGANIC : Blaufrankisch
MED-BODIED, BLACKBERRY, DRIED PLUM, BLACK PEPPER, OAK
Haloze is steep limestone hill country in the southern reaches of Štajerska — 2,000 years of viticulture compressed into terraced slopes that climb as high as 400 meters. The marl soils force vines deep, slowing ripening and building concentration; cool air moves through the valley floors at night, preserving the fresh acidity that keeps Blaufrankisch from going heavy.
Bojan Kobal hand-harvests from 35-year-old vines on his family estate, macerates the Blaufrankisch for 21 days with spontaneous fermentation in open oak vats, then ages the wine in used barrique for six months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The result is a structured red with real texture and a long, slightly earthy finish — worth the 45-minute decant the winery recommends.
PAIRINGS :
| Braised venison or wild boar stew | the regional food match for Haloze — tannins cut through fat; dark fruit echoes the meat's depth |
| Smoked ham with roasted peppers | earthiness and oak amplify cured pork; the black pepper finish echoes the peppers |
| Mushroom risotto | earthy umami is a natural match for the wine's leather and mineral notes |
