FRANCE : CHAMPAGNE
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
FULL-BODIED, CARAMEL, HAZELNUT, CITRUS GRATIN, LIME ZEST, NEUTRAL OAK
2000 threw everything at Champagne — a rainy spring, then on July 2 a hailstorm that hit close to 4,000 hectares, about 13% of the appellation, and wiped out Pinot Noir north of the Montagne de Reims. Krug's tasting committee named the wine Stormy Indulgence.
The blend is a near-even split: 43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir and 15% Meunier, with Pinot from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Aÿ, and Chardonnay from Trépail and Villers-Marmery brought in to tame the Avize and Le Mesnil whites. Every plot ferments on its own in small old oak casks Krug keeps neutral, and the wine rested more than a decade in Krug's cellars before release.
Caramel, nougat and fresh pastry on the nose, citrus and lime zest on a long finish. Wine Spectator 97 pts: "Rich and mouthwatering, this powerhouse Champagne is driven by vivacious acidity."
PAIRINGS :
| Caramelised scallops with pineapple | Krug's own pairing; the caramelised crust meets the caramel-nougat nose. |
| Roast squab | Krug's own pairing; the Pinot Noir structure carries dark game. |
| Roasted peaches | Roasted fruit lines up with the pastry and citrus-gratin notes. |
