Lagavulin distills slowly — more than nine hours in the spirit still — and the 2022 Special Release pulls from the smokiest casks in the warehouse, pairing refill peated American oak with virgin oak to drive extra intensity and wood-forward spice. At 57.3% natural cask strength, this is a peatier, sharper Lagavulin than the 16-year-old you know.

Whisky Advocate awarded it 91 points — calling out "smoked ham on the bone, brine, highly aromatic smoke" on the nose and "powerful spices, lemon peel, and red chile flakes" on the palate. Bottled under the release name "The Flames of the Phoenix," it's non-chill-filtered and natural color.
