The oldest recipe in the Chartreuse line. In 1605 François-Annibal d'Estrées handed the Carthusian monks a manuscript for an "Elixir of long life" built on 130 plants, and they spent a century and a half working it out — the formula was fixed in 1764 and hasn't changed since, 76 years before the Green and Yellow liqueurs were named.

Production takes several weeks in three stages: distillation for the aroma, maceration for the natural color, extraction for the rest. It's bottled at 69% ABV in a 100ml bottle that sits in a wooden case to keep out the light.

A tonic first, a drink second. The monks' own instructions are a teaspoon neat, a few drops on a sugar cube, or dashes into hot water with honey and lemon. Behind the bar it works like bitters — a few dashes over a sugar cube topped with Champagne, or into a gin Martini. The importer's tip: a few drops on oysters.
