ITALY : VENETO : BREGANZE DOC
CONVENTIONAL : Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
MED-BODIED, RIPE CHERRY, DARK PLUM, FRESH SPICE, LIGHT TOAST, OAK
Breganze sits at the foot of the Asiago Plateau in northeast Italy — volcanic soils, Alpine air, and a DOC that most wine drinkers have never encountered. It's Bordeaux territory, loosely speaking: the altitude slows ripening in a way that the Veneto's hotter, flatter zones can't manage, and Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have made themselves at home here since Fausto Maculan started taking the estate seriously in 1973.
Brentino is the everyday expression of that work — 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in stainless steel with regular punch-downs, then each variety aged separately for a year: half in tank, half in older French barriques. The split keeps the fruit intact while the barriques add the spice and firmness the blend needs. Luca Maroni scored the 2022 at 93 points.
PAIRINGS :
| Wild boar ragù over pappardelle | dark fruit and firm tannin absorb the gamey richness; spice echoes the braise |
| Roasted lamb with rosemary | classic Merlot-Cab territory — the herbal note bridges wine and aromatics |
| Aged Asiago | the regional pairing; fat balances the tannin, brings out the wine's spice edge |
