Macabeo
MED-BODIED, GREEN APPLE, PEAR, LEMON, BRUISED APPLE SKIN, NO OAK
Macabeo is the grape most people have drunk without knowing it — the backbone of Cava, and, as Viura, of white Rioja. Bottled still and unoaked like this, it gives orchard fruit and a citrus edge on a light 11% frame, and not much else. The restraint is the point.
Masia Pubill comes out of Cellers Unió, a federation of village cooperatives based in Reus, south of Tarragona, pooling fruit from member growers across Catalonia. Grower-owned rather than négociant, which is uncommon this far down the price list. Decanter's February 2026 Spanish Viura/Macabeo panel tasted the 2024 blind alongside aged Rioja and single-vineyard Priorat whites, and called it fresh and clean, with lemony lift and green apple.
Screwcap, serve cold, drink it this year.
PAIRINGS :
| Grilled sardines | citrus lift against oily blue fish — the Catalan coast default |
| White asparagus with romesco | green apple handles the vegetal bitterness |
| Clams with pasta | acidity keeps the garlic and oil from flattening the plate |
