Michter's takes fully matured US*1 Kentucky Straight Rye and moves it, at barrel strength, into a second barrel built from wood air-dried outdoors for 24 months and toasted rather than charred. Toasting caramelizes the wood sugars instead of burning them off, so the second barrel adds sweetness and depth where a charred barrel would strip and filter.

Michter's put a toasted-barrel whiskey on shelves in 2014, years before the style went mainstream, and the rye version is the one that best shows what the technique does with the grain's baking-spice backbone.

A limited release, issued in distinct batches and bottled barrel by barrel, so the strength on the label varies from bottle to bottle.
