Michter’s batches the US*1 at a maximum of twenty barrels per batch — small enough that there’s no margin for blending out imperfection. Each barrel enters at 103 proof, one of the lowest barrel entry proofs in American bourbon, and the wood is air-dried 18–48 months and toasted before charring. The combination of low entry proof and extended maturation in heat-cycled warehouses is what pushes the profile toward deep caramel and baking spice rather than raw corn sweetness.

The US*1 designation traces the brand’s lineage to John Shenk’s 1753 Pennsylvania distillery — widely considered America’s first commercial whiskey operation. Today Michter’s operates two Louisville facilities: Fort Nelson (pot-to-pot stills, restored 2019) and Shively (column-to-pot stills, 14,400-barrel capacity).
