Monkey 47 takes its name from both the 47 botanicals it contains and its 47% ABV. The distillery in Lossburg, deep in Germany's Black Forest, draws on local foraged botanicals (lingonberry, spruce shoots, sloe berries, elderflower, bramble leaves) alongside exotic arrivals from India and Southeast Asia: jasmine, ginger, vervain, chamomile. All 47 are steeped together in French grain spirit for 36 hours, then batch-distilled in a copper pot still.

The gin is matured briefly in traditional earthenware vessels before bottling unfiltered at 47% ABV. No colouring, no filtration. Named for a spider monkey from the Berlin Zoo adopted by the British airman whose Black Forest botanical obsessions inspired the recipe.
