Morgadio da Calçada is a 17th-century manor house in Provesende — one of the Douro’s most celebrated hilltop villages — where the estate’s elevation and schist soils produce wines closer to elegant than extracted. The project is a partnership with Dirk Niepoort, whose philosophy here is minimal wood and genuine freshness: “not worked with much wood. They are not heavy (...) wines that taste good to drink, fresh, simple and elegant.”
The 2020 Douro was the hottest and smallest harvest of the century — yields down 40% in some properties, earliest pick dates on record. Cima Corgo was the standout sub-region: elevation moderated the heat, and Touriga Nacional retained exceptional structure and acidity. Grapes were fermented in stainless steel, then partially aged in French oak for six months.
PAIRINGS :
| Braised lamb shoulder | soft tannins don’t fight the fat; red fruit matches the herb rub |
| Francesinha | the Porto sandwich classic; the wine’s savory edge and freshness cut through |
| Grilled pork with migas | traditional Douro table food; the 2020 concentration holds up to smoky char |
