Natte Valleij Cinsault 2022 750ml
SOUTH AFRICA : COASTAL REGION
NATURAL : Cinsault
LIGHT-BODIED, CHERRY, EARTHY STRAWBERRY, RASPBERRY, NEUTRAL OAK
Cinsault is South Africa's most underrated grape — the parent of Pinotage and once the country's most-planted red variety, abandoned for decades, now being rediscovered by producers who can see what old dry-land bush vines actually produce when treated with care. Alex Milner was among the first to make that bet, building the entire Natte Valleij identity around this variety from a 300-year-old cellar on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg.
The Coastal Cinsault draws from five bush vine plots across Paarl, Darling, Stellenbosch, and the Swartland — vine ages ranging from 14 to 50 years. Native yeast fermentation, twelve months in concrete egg and neutral foudre, no filtration. The result sits at 12.5% ABV with the structure and depth of the blend but none of the weight.
PAIRINGS :
| Grilled lamb chops with rosemary | earthy freshness matches lamb's character without competing with it |
| Charcuterie and biltong | classic Cinsault pairing — salty, savory, and the red-fruit lift ties it together |
| Mushroom risotto | earthy wine, earthy dish — the concrete aging adds a mineral thread that works |
