Grain whisky is normally blending stock, bottled under someone else's name. Nikka bottles theirs on its own, and the reason it works is a pair of Coffey stills at the Miyagikyo distillery, continuous stills of an 1830s design that Nikka bought from Scotland in 1963 and still runs today.

The mash is mostly corn with a little malted barley, matured in used American oak for an average of twelve years. That puts it closer to bourbon than to a Highland malt: sweet corn, vanilla wafer, tropical fruit, and a honeyed citrus finish.

Whisky Advocate 89 pts. Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2015 and again in 2020. Good neat, better in a highball, and it holds its shape in a cocktail where a malt would disappear.
