Malt whisky almost always comes off a pot still. This one doesn't. Nikka runs 100% malted barley through the pair of Coffey column stills at Miyagikyo, bought from Scotland in 1963, and the continuous still builds a silkier, chewier texture than a pot still gives.

The catch is legal rather than qualitative. Because it is not pot-distilled, Nikka cannot call it malt whisky, so a bottle made entirely from barley is sold as grain whisky.

Maturation is in old casks, mostly ex-bourbon, which keeps the oak in the background and lets the peach and honey lead. Whisky Advocate 89 pts.
