The name points at the blending barrel, not the maturing one. Nikka's blenders combine more than a hundred separately matured batches of malt and grain whisky, then return the finished liquid to used puncheon casks at the Tochigi cellar for three more months — a marriage that lets the components settle into each other instead of sitting side by side.

The idea came from Takeshi Taketsuru, who wanted to bottle what only a blender gets to taste, straight from the cask. Master blender Shigeo Sato's team answered it in 1985, and landed on 51.4% as the strength that carried the most flavor without turning harsh. Whisky Advocate named it the #1 whisky of 2018.
