Nikka built Miyagikyo in 1969 to be everything Yoichi is not. Masataka Taketsuru spent three years looking for the site and settled on a river confluence west of Sendai, where volcanic soil filters the spring water and the climate runs gentler than the Hokkaido coast.

The stills finish the argument — tall necks, long lyne arms, reflux rings inside the throat, and indirect steam rather than direct coal fire. Every one of those choices strips weight out and leaves fruit behind.

This no-age-statement bottling arrived in 2016 as the permanent replacement for the discontinued 10, 12 and 15 year Miyagikyo, and it is now the only core expression. Predominantly ex-bourbon with a sherry-cask seam underneath, plus a touch of lightly peated malt that reads as faint roast rather than smoke.
