ITALY : TUSCANY : MONTALCINO

Sangiovese

FULL-BODIED, DRIED CHERRY, LEATHER, HOT TAR, DARK SPICE, NEUTRAL OAK

La Fuga sits at the southwest corner of Montalcino, where the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea and fossil-rich soils of the Camigliano hillside push Brunello toward power and mineral depth in equal measure. The estate, owned by the Folonari family since 2001, produces just one Brunello bottling — no reserve of fruit diverted elsewhere, the entire harvest channeled into this single wine.

The 2018 vintage ran cool and fresh after a string of warm years, with moderate summer temperatures and strong westerly winds drying the harvest right before picking. The result is Brunello with more aromatic transparency than the brawnier 2015 or 2017 — Wine Enthusiast awarded it 95 points, calling out its "delightful, spicy argument between chili and vanilla bean." Wine Advocate gave it 92. Aged four years in large-format Slavonian oak and six months in bottle before release.

PAIRINGS :

Bistecca alla Fiorentina The classic pairing — high-heat beef and the wine's structured tannins were made for each other
Wild boar ragù over pappardelle Gamey richness needs Brunello's acidity to cut through
Aged Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano Hard cheeses bring out the wine's savory, umami core
