The Old Charter Oak series exists to answer one question: what does the barrel actually do? Each expression in the lineup uses the same Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #1 distillate aged in a different type of oak — French, Chinquapin, and here, American white oak from Canton Cooperage, whose staves are hand-sorted and open-air seasoned in Kentucky rather than kiln-dried. That distinction matters: air-seasoned staves develop flavor precursors more gradually, producing integrated oak character without the harsh edges of green wood.

The result is a bourbon that leads with caramel and berries on the nose, deepens into vanilla and maple syrup on the palate, and finishes long with oak, chocolate, and pepper — the classic American white oak signature, at its most carefully realized. Buffalo Trace recommends serving it neat. We agree.
