Bourbon law demands a new charred oak barrel, not an American one. Old Charter Oak is Buffalo Trace's running test of that loophole — the same Mash Bill #1 distillate behind Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare, aged in barrels coopered from oak grown somewhere other than the American forest.

French Oak is the one the distillery keeps coming back to. Harlen Wheatley first filled French barrels in 1995 and released the first result in 2006. The tighter-grained wood gives texture more than brute oak: thick, maple-syrup sweet on the palate, apricot, cherry and rose petal on the nose, a long finish of chocolate and toasted oak. Pour it next to Eagle Rare and the tree does all the talking.
