Red Top was one of the biggest whiskey brands in America before Prohibition. Ferdinand Westheimer, a German immigrant working out of Missouri, put it on Pullman cars and handed out samples at the 1904 World's Fair. His children let the brand lapse when he died, and Julian Van Winkle III revived it once in the 1990s as a 15-year single barrel before it went quiet again.

This is the 2026 return, and the recipe is unusual for Kentucky: 100% rye, where nearly every American rye leans on the standard 95/5 mash bill with malted barley. Seven years on the top floor of the rickhouse, where the temperature swings hardest, pushed more wood extraction and a higher proof off the barrel.

The result reads dried fruit and florals rather than the mint-and-dill profile most rye drinkers expect. At 105 proof it still has the backbone for a Vieux Carré or a Perfect Manhattan.
