This barrel rested on the third floor of Warehouse H before it was dumped at 126.6 proof and bottled with no water and no filtration. Old Forester heat-cycles its rickhouses through winter so the barrels never go dormant in the cold, which is why a rye carrying no age statement lands well past its calendar age. The company also chars its own barrels at a cooperage on Whiskey Row, which almost nobody in Kentucky still does.

The recipe is 65% rye, 20% malted barley, 15% corn, acquired by Brown-Forman in a 1940 deal and left in the archives until 2019. That barley number is the outlier, because most American ryes run 5 to 15 percent, and it is where the nuttiness comes from: pecan and hazelnut sitting under the cherry and brown sugar.

This is the lowest proof of the three single barrels on our shelf, and that may be the good news. The two highest-scoring barrels published anywhere in the program were both low-proof ones: The Whiskey Wash 9/10 on a 124-proof barrel, Paste 8.6/10 on a 127. This one sits between them.
