Old Forester didn't make rye until 2019, and when they did they didn't write a recipe, they found one. The Normandy Rye mash bill came into Brown-Forman in a 1940 acquisition and sat in the archives for nearly eighty years: 65% rye, 20% malted barley, 15% corn. The barley is the tell. Most American ryes run 5 to 15 percent, and the extra malt is where the cereal and hazelnut notes come from.

Paste reviewed a 127-proof barrel from this program at launch and scored it 8.6/10, calling it a cannon next to the derringer of the always-available 100 proof. This barrel dumped at 127.8. In a single barrel program where every bottle is effectively its own product, that is about as close as published criticism gets to the liquid in the glass: roasty and savory on the first pass, charred oak and coffee and clove, then maraschino and citrus underneath once the heat steps back.

Unfiltered, undiluted, no age statement. Old Forester heat-cycles its Whiskey Row warehouses through winter so the barrels never go dormant, which is why a young rye lands well past its calendar age. Jim Vorel put it plainly: despite the proof, his palate never felt overpowered, and the whiskey never felt in need of more maturation.
