Old Forester had no rye at all until 2019, when they pulled the Normandy Rye recipe out of their own archives: 65% rye, 20% malted barley, 15% corn, acquired in a 1940 deal and left alone for nearly eighty years. The barley is the tell. Most American ryes run 5 to 15 percent, and that extra malt is where the cereal, bubblegum, and hazelnut notes come from.

The single barrel program went nationwide in 2021, unfiltered and undiluted, roughly fifty barrels in the first run. This one dumped at 130 proof, near the top of the range, and it drinks softer than the number suggests. Old Forester heat-cycles its Whiskey Row warehouses through winter, so the barrels never go dormant and a no-age-statement whiskey lands well past its calendar age.

Bourbon Culture scored the program and called out the green nose that separates it from cornier Kentucky ryes: fennel, mint, cut grass, wet hay. Master Taster Jackie Zykan put the release more plainly at launch, calling it the same profile as the 100 proof, only amplified and in unfiltered, raw form.
