Twenty years in Kentucky oak produces a different kind of bourbon. Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 20 Year is drawn from the same wheated mash bill as the everyday Weller lineup — wheat instead of rye as the secondary grain — and aged at Buffalo Trace until the fruit and oak reach a settlement the younger expressions can’t achieve. At 90.4 proof it arrives integrated rather than intense: dark cherry, caramel, tobacco, and two decades of well-managed wood.
Julian Van Winkle III releases this annually in limited allocation. The name on the bottle is four generations old. The whiskey behind it earns the reputation. World Spirits Championship 99 pts.
