USA : KENTUCKY : NEW BERNHEIM DISTILLERY / STITZEL-WELLER RICKHOUSES

86% corn, 8% malted barley, 6% rye — 15 years

CEDAR, MAPLE SYRUP, CARAMEL, DARK CHERRY, BLACK PEPPER, DRIED OAK

Orphan Barrel Forged Oak is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey distilled in 1997–1998 at the New Bernheim Distillery in Louisville — then operating as a Heaven Hill facility — and aged for 15 years in the historic Stitzel-Weller rickhouses in Shively, Kentucky. Bottled in February 2015 at Diageo's George Dickel facility in Tullahoma, Tennessee as the fifth release in the Orphan Barrel line. Mash bill: 86% corn, 8% malted barley, 6% rye. The same recipe as Barterhouse, running five years younger.

The Orphan Barrel series is discontinued. Bottles from the 2015 release carry the full provenance: distilled at New Bernheim where Heaven Hill made its flagship bourbons, aged at Stitzel-Weller where Pappy Van Winkle built his legacy. Reviewers consistently note the split character — a bright, welcoming nose of maple, cherry strudel, and caramel that gives way to an oak-dominant palate of cedar, leather, and dry black pepper. 90.5 proof, approachable and wood-forward.
