Pierre Sparr Riesling AOC Alsace 2023 750ml
FRANCE : ALSACE : HAUT-RHIN
SUSTAINABLE : Riesling
LIGHT-BODIED, ELDERFLOWER, YUZU ZEST, CITRUS PITH, NO OAK
Maison Pierre Sparr has been making wine in Beblenheim since 1680, one of Alsace’s oldest family houses and still independent. The AOC Alsace Riesling comes off granitic, chalk-and-clay soils in the Haut-Rhin, cold-settled and fermented in stainless steel at 18 to 20°C for about a month, with no oak and no malolactic conversion.
2023 was a late harvest in Alsace. A dry summer pushed sugar maturity back and still-wine picking only began on 4 September, with cool nights holding the acid in place. Coulure had already cut the Riesling crop hard at flowering, so there is less of it around than usual.
It lands at 12.5% alcohol with 5.34 g/L total acidity: elderflower and yuzu zest on the nose, crisp and fresh up front, and a light bitter grip on the finish that gives it real length.
PAIRINGS :
| Choucroute garnie | the Alsatian classic — smoked pork and brined sauerkraut meet the wine’s mineral acidity and saline finish |
| Miso-glazed salmon | umami richness and the wine’s brisk acidity are a natural counterpart |
| Aged Comté | nutty, salty Alpine cheese pairs with the wine’s mineral spine and citrus edge |
