Ciauría comes from bush-trained Nerello Mascalese on the north side of Mount Etna, in Castiglione di Sicilia and Randazzo, at about 750 meters on deep, porous black volcanic ash. The Caciorgna family has farmed in Casole d’Elsa, Tuscany, since 1953; Pietro Caciorgna came to Etna in 2006 at a friend’s invitation, bought Nerello vineyards near Passopisciaro and Randazzo, and added Ciauría to the range in 2009.
It ferments in stainless steel, malolactic included, then spends six months in second-use French barriques and at least six months in bottle. Red cherry, raspberry and dried flowers lead, with a smoky, mineral edge, and it draws the obvious Pinot Noir comparisons. The kind of $24 bottle that earns repeat buys.
