Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso Ciauría 2023 750ml
Pietro Caciorgna Etna Rosso Ciauría 2023 750ml
ITALY : SICILY : ETNA ROSSO DOC
ORGANIC : Nerello Mascalese
LIGHT-BODIED, TANGERINE, DRIED ROSE, WILD STRAWBERRY, VOLCANIC MINERAL, NO OAK
Mount Etna’s northern slope: volcanic basalt soils, pre-phylloxera vines over a century old, altitude above 1,800 feet, and a growing season extended by Tyrrhenian sea breeze well past the rest of Sicily. Paolo Caciorgna’s family found these parcels in Passo Cannone and Randazzo in 2006 and built their winery around them—old vines, organic farming, and Nerello Mascalese harvested in late October when the acidity is still intact.
The Ciauria is their everyday Etna: stainless steel fermentation, six months in neutral barrels, nothing added that would cover the volcanic mineral character. Light-bodied and aromatic, it draws the obvious Pinot Noir comparisons—wild strawberry, dried rose, and volcanic mineral in the foreground; ginger and herbs in the background. The kind of $24 bottle that earns repeat buys.
PAIRINGS :
| Margherita pizza | charred crust and tomato acidity alongside the wine’s bright fruit—the classic local answer, and it holds up |
| Grilled lamb with rosemary | light tannins handle the fat; the wine’s dried rose and herb notes bridge to the prep |
| Mushroom risotto | earthy depth and volcanic mineral run the same thread; a natural match |
