ITALY : PIEMONTE : BARBARESCO DOCG
Nebbiolo
FULL-BODIED, DARK CHERRY, DRIED ROSE, LEATHER, IRON, NEW OAK
Il Bricco — “peak of the hill” in Piemontese — sits at 400 meters in Treiso, the highest and windiest corner of the Barbaresco appellation. The Pio Cesare family has farmed these clay and compact marl slopes since 1974, working several micro-plots at the vineyard’s most elevated portion. Vines average 40 years old; the wine is only produced in years the family deems excellent. First made in 1990, it remains one of the smallest allocations in the DOCG — roughly 7,000 bottles per vintage.
Fermentation in stainless steel with 15 days of skin contact, then 30 months in French oak — 70% new barriques, 30% large 20-hectoliter casks. Both the 2019 and 2020 vintages scored 97 points from James Suckling and 94+ from Wine Advocate, with critics noting the 2019’s power and long trajectory (best from 2026, drinking to 2045), and the 2020’s more open, accessible character (ready now through 2036). Pio Cesare has been in the historic center of Alba since 1881; the fifth generation — led by Federica Boffa — now runs the estate.
