Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte range is the distillery's answer to a question they set out to answer the moment they reopened in 2001: what does a true Islay whisky taste like? Named for a historic distillery that operated in the village of Port Charlotte for 100 years before closing, this expression starts with 100% Scottish barley peated to 40 PPM — classic Islay intensity — and distills it slowly through 140-year-old Victorian stills to coax out a heathery, balanced style of smoke rather than a peat bomb.
Ten years in first-fill bourbon, second-fill bourbon, and French wine casks (65/10/25) produces a whisky of surprising grace. The peat is present but plays a supporting role to honey, vanilla, ripe stone fruit, and a vinous dark undercurrent from the wine casks. Non-chill filtered, natural color, bottled at 50% ABV. Whisky Advocate ranked it #4 in their Top 20 Whiskies of 2018 and awarded 93 points; Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition the same year.
SUGGESTED SERVES :
| Neat | give it a minute to open — the smoke settles and the honey and fruit come forward |
| With a splash of water | a teaspoon opens the nose dramatically, pulling out heather, grapefruit, and the wine cask's dark fruit |
| On a large ice cube | the chill tames the smoke slightly and lets the malt sweetness read more clearly |
