Post & Beam is Far Niente's second label — the same Director of Winemaking, Andrew Delos, applies the same philosophy that has driven Far Niente's Chardonnay since 1979: source from the right site, use oak for texture not flavor, and let the wine speak for itself. The 2023 Carneros Chardonnay draws from Far Niente's Grand Sky Vineyard, a cool estate site at the Napa-Sonoma boundary where Pacific fog and afternoon breezes extend the growing season well beyond anywhere further inland.
Delos skips malolactic fermentation entirely — unusual in California at this price — preserving the bright, lifted acidity that structures the whole wine. French oak is used for fermentation but none of it is new, so the oak is textural and supportive rather than the point. Tasting Panel rated it 93 points.
