FRANCE : BURGUNDY : CÔTE DE BEAUNE

Pinot Noir

MED-BODIED, RED CHERRY, SOUS BOIS, DRIED HERBS, MINERAL, NEUTRAL OAK

Les Santenots sits within the commune of Meursault, but its Pinot Noir carries the Volnay appellation — the only Premier Cru in Burgundy that crosses a commune boundary. The soils run distinctly red here, higher in iron and clay than neighboring Volnay 1er Crus, which gives Santenots wines more structural grip beneath the appellation's characteristic lift and fragrance.

Robert Ampeau et Fils released this 2002 roughly 16 years after harvest — that's the house's position: hold wines in Meursault's cold cellars until they're ready. The 2002 Côte de Beaune vintage was one of the finest of its decade, marked by a north wind in September that concentrated the fruit while preserving its freshness. Both remain intact.
