Vance Rose has spent four decades sourcing fruit from Napa and Sonoma's best-positioned sites, and his working method at RouteStock is to find the right vineyard and then stay out of the way. The Sonoma Coast bottling draws on three sustainably farmed sites, including the estate Moon Dust Vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills, where 29-year-old vines sit on goldridge and sandy loam.
2024 brought a third straight year of heavy winter and spring rain, so the canopies came in vigorous and needed thinning to keep green flavors out of the fruit. Harvest started mid-September. Fermented on indigenous yeast in French oak, 91% of it neutral, with malolactic stopped around 70% through to hold the acidity, then nine months on the gross lees without racking.
