Smith & Cross Jamaican Rum 750ml
JAMAICA : TRELAWNY : HAMPDEN ESTATE
100% Pot Still — Molasses-Based — Wedderburn & Plummer Marks Blended
FULL-BODIED, OVERRIPE BANANA, TROPICAL FRUIT, CLOVE, LEATHER, HOGO
Smith & Cross is two things at once: a name from 1788 and a rum designed to carry the full weight of Jamaican pot still tradition. Both distillates — Wedderburn and Plummer — come from Hampden Estate in Trelawny, one of the Caribbean's oldest continuously operating sugar estates and the distillery most associated with the intense ester character that defines classic Jamaican rum. The Wedderburn is aged briefly; the Plummer runs 18 months to three years in ex-bourbon oak. Blended in Amsterdam by E&A Scheer, bottled at 114 proof without filtration or added sweeteners.
What you're tasting is hogo — the Jamaican term, borrowed from the French haut goût, for the overripe tropical fruit and leathery funk that Hampden's dunder-pit fermentation produces. It is not subtle. In a daiquiri or Mai Tai, it's the reason the drink works. Neat, with a small splash of water, it opens into honey, banana, spice, and a long earthy finish. Wine Enthusiast scored it 95 points and called it "enticingly untamed."
The brand's historical roots reach back to Smith & Tyers and the White Cross firm — sugar refiners and rum blenders who operated near the Thames Street docks as some of England's most prominent handlers of Jamaica rum. This isn't marketing mythology; it's a documented lineage that makes Smith & Cross one of the few rums on the market with a verifiable 238-year supply chain story.
