The name points underground — to the sediment the Missoula Floods spread across the Columbia Basin more than 20,000 years ago, the subsoil of the Mercer family's Horse Heaven Hills vineyards. Pockets of sandy soil, canyons, and a steady wind off the Columbia River define the ground they farm.
The family has been here longer than the AVA's reputation: Don and Linda Mercer planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon in the Horse Heaven Hills in 1972, on Dr. Walter Clore's advice, and the first Mercer Estates vintage came out of Prosser in 2005. Subsoil is their bright, fruit-driven take on the place. This is the 2025.
