Shinjiro Torii opened Yamazaki in 1923 as Japan's first malt whisky distillery, on the edge of Kyoto where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers meet — soft water, a misty valley, and swings in temperature and humidity that suit long cask aging.

The 18 has anchored the range since 1992: malts aged at least eighteen years in American, Spanish and Mizunara oak, vatted to the house style. Raisin, apricot and café au lait on the nose; blackberry, strawberry jam and dark chocolate on the palate; a long, spiced finish. Mizunara is one component here, not the whole show — the all-Mizunara bottling is a separate edition.

Named Supreme Champion Spirit at the 2025 International Spirits Challenge, with ISC Gold again in 2026. The Dramble 90 pts.
