The 2024 Tsukuriwake series is built around a single cask type, unmixed — this bottling is Mizunara only, matured for a minimum of 18 years. Mizunara is the rare Japanese oak Suntory first used in 1940, when imported barrels became unavailable. They kept using it after the war because the aromatic contribution — sandalwood, incense, coconut, oriental spice — had no Western equivalent.

The wood's character takes years to emerge. Most producers agree Mizunara doesn't fully reveal its signature notes until a spirit has been inside it for a decade or more. At 18 years minimum, this is Mizunara at full expression. Whisky Advocate has scored prior releases in this line up to 96 points.
