Mizunara is the Japanese oak Suntory turned to after the war, when European and American casks stopped arriving. The wood is hard, permeable and prone to leaking — the cask makers will only take trees that grew perfectly straight and measure at least 27.5 inches across, which for a slow-growing hardwood means very old trees.

Fourth chief blender Shinji Fukuyo tasted a few hundred Mizunara-matured whiskies to build this one. Everything in the bottle is at least 18 years old, and a small portion has sat in Mizunara for more than 50 years — long enough for the sandalwood and incense the wood is known for to fully arrive.

Released October 2017 at 48%. The label is handmade Echizen mulberry paper; the box is built from staves of retired Suntory casks. Distiller 96 pts.
