Sassicaia was the original Super Tuscan, planted in the 1940s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta on stony Bolgheri terrain that reminded him of Bordeaux's Graves district. It was made for family and friends for over twenty years before its first commercial release in 1971 — and it's still the only wine in Italy with its own single-estate DOC, granted in 1994.

The 2019 draws from five named estate plots at 100–360 meters, fermented in stainless steel with native yeast and aged 24 months in French barriques, roughly two-thirds new wood. Wine Advocate's Monica Larner ranked it the third-best Sassicaia vintage ever made, behind only 1985 and 2016, projecting it to keep improving through at least 2055. Decanter gave it a perfect 100 points.
